The Amazon of Europe Bike Trail is an international long-distance cycling trail offering you a unique opportunity for cycling holidays, following the natural meanders of the rivers Mura, Drava and Danube, for over 1,250 km. The bike trail gives access to the world´s first five country (Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia) UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube. 

It is divided into the North and South Route. The South Route stretches over more than 700 km and is divided into 16 stages, which take you through deep shades of mysterious forests and refreshing blue colors of the ancient rivers and wetlands in world-famous protected areas. Your journey will take you from Mureck in Austria, through Slovenia into Croatia alongside the river Mura. After witnessing the confluence of Mura and Drava, you will follow Drava all the way to its confluence with the mighty Danube on the Croatian-Serbian border. Crossing the border to Serbia, you will cycle up-stream the Danube, and finally cross it to reach the end of the AoE Bike Trail in the Hungarian city of Mohacs.

You can also enrich your cycling holiday with guided canoeing or birdwatching, visits to local cultural and natural heritage sites and many other activities along the way. With some luck, you will be able to spot the majestic white-tailed eagle or the extremely shy black stork, as well as meet turtles or otters in their natural habitat. At the end of the day, enjoy the authentic hospitality of the locals, relax in a spa and taste the unforgettably delicious local cuisine. 

The Amazon of Europe Bike Trail was initiated in 2015 by WWF to link the conservation of the rivers with sustainable tourism that would bring economic benefits to local communities of the 5-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube. A network of more than 50 committed local and regional stakeholders across the five countries was formed and, in cooperation with EuroNatur and international trail and tourism experts from Revital and Trail Angels, the Bike Trail concept was developed. In 2018, the implementation of the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail project started under the leadership of Iskriva, Institute for Development of Local Potentials (Slovenia), funded by the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme.

The Amazon of Europe spans across 1 million hectares of extraordinary natural and cultural landscapes, where the three rivers Mura, Drava and Danube connect Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia. This area hosts the world’s first 5-country UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
