In a world where the food we eat is often either over-processed or over-sprayed with pesticides, we risk becoming too used to it and forgetting what real food tastes like. In a small organic farm on the outskirts of Lake Bled and at the entrance to the beautiful Radovna Valley, the owners are offering to revive your taste buds with their unique herbal experiences.
Their organic garden is situated on a nice small plot of land surrounded by some of Slovenia’s most beautiful landscape. In this pristine, natural environment the owners grow vegetables, herbs, berries, nuts and also keep some free range chickens. Beekeeping is a national pastime in Slovenia and so it's no surprise that there is also a beehive producing some delicious, natural organic honey.
The owners have made their place totally self-sustaining, using solar power for energy, a drill to extract water from the natural spring below and composting to enrich the soil in which they grow their produce. Their goal is to recycle everything and ensure there is zero waste.
On this two-hour tour they will show you how they dry herbs and salt in a traditional Slovenian hayrack, and also how they distil them for hydrolats and soak them in alcohol to make schnapps. You can try their organic baking with delicious Slovene delicacies such as Tarragon Potica (a kind of sponge roll) and wild yeast bread.
The best part of all however, is the walk beside the mouth-watering berry bushes loaded with delicious berries packed with nutrition for energy. You can pick and taste any of the berries you wish. Enjoy the wonderful aroma from the herbal garden itself and the colourful rose bushes, and pick your selection of herbs to make your own personal blend of tea. You may take this home in an ecological biodegradable pack.
There will be a variety of their produce for sale and each participant will take home the selection of herbs that they have collected. Your visit will not only be a wonderful, enriching experience but you will also be helping to keep their dream of a self-sustainable life alive.
